Job Summary:
Under the direction
of and reporting to the General Counsel, with
considerable latitude, the Director of the Risk
Management Program is responsible for coordinating a
comprehensive approach for the identification,
review, evaluation and resolution of potential and
actual clinical events which pose risks to current
and future patients and which have or may not have
the potential for litigation. As an advocate of
patient and staff safety, the Director reports the
General Counsel, and works closely with the senior
management team, physician, nursing and other
Hospital staff, defense counsel, the third party
administrator/claims management company, and others
to assist in defining and resolving concerns and in
identifying and acting on risk reduction
opportunities and trends in order to reduce the
potential for untoward events and outcomes. As an
advocate for the reduction of institutional risk,
the Director will lead in identifying trends,
patterns or significant issues, and assists in
developing policies and strategies to eliminate,
resolve or minimize such risks. The Director works
closely with all members of the senior management,
including the Chief Medical Officer and Chief
Nursing Officer, the medical staff leadership,
germane hospital and medical staff committees, as
well as select committees of the Board of Trustees
in assessing and managing risk. The Director is the
principal liaison between the Hospital’s legal
consultants, attorneys, and insurance carriers.
Responsibilities include:
- Coordinate the
review and responses for all potential New York
Patient Occurrence Reporting System (NYPORTS)
cases and similar potential quality of care
cases. Track and trend reporting of NYPORTS for
the institution and provide comparative data to
routinely and critically evaluate the NYPORTS
reporting.
- Coordinate the
monthly Medical Staff Peer Review Committee,
which has the oversight for the management of
NYPORTs and other related incidents.
- Work with Chief
Medical Officer and physician and nursing staff
to participate in the peer review process.
- Prepare on a
quarterly or as needed basis reports of risk
management, peer review, claims, incidents and
lawsuits or any other reports for the Board of
Trustees, Chief Executive Officer, General
Counsel or other senior management team, or as
requested.
- Provide
appropriate patient or other information to
legal consultants, attorneys and insurance
carriers on medical malpractice claims,
incidents and lawsuits in the defense of such
claims.
- Provide
guidance and recommendations to medical and
nursing staff with regard to consents,
summonses, subpoenas, and patient and/or medical
management issues.
- Coordinate and
provide staff education and in-service training
directed to fostering adherence to quality of
care standards, established risk management
protocols and risk reduction initiatives.
- Coordinate
reviews by and responses to the New York State
Department of Health or other federal or state
agencies, accrediting organizations or other
entities on behalf of the Hospital.
- Participate as
a member of the Hospital’s Quality Council
meetings, and the Board of Trustees’ Insurance
and Risk Management Committee as well as its
Patient Care and Quality Assurance Committee.
- Other
responsibilities as requested by the General
Counsel and senior management.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s
degree and R.N. licensure required; J.D.
preferred.
- Five or more
years of progressive experience in healthcare
management preferred.
- Excellent
presentation and interactive communication
skills for communicating effectively with the
General Counsel, senior management, Hospital
staff, the Board of Trustees, and patients and
their families.
- Strong writing
skills and superior quantitative ability to
insightfully evaluate data and prepare
management summaries and statistical reports.
Computer skills to support expectations of
analysis and presentation.
- Clinical
analytic skills sufficient to succinctly
identify and summarize complex medical issues in
the peer review process, claims meetings, or for
quality assurance meeting, and to otherwise
report such to the Board of Trustees and senior
management team.
